Huckabee: Evangelicals More Supportive of Israel than U.S. Jews

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

Mike Huckabee, most widely known as a former Republican presidential candidate, said recently that evangelicals are more supportive of Israel than even American Jews.

In an interview with CBN News, Huckabee, who was wrapping up a trip to Israel, called evangelicals the “best friends” of Israeli Jews.

While American Jews are divided on the level of support for Israel in terms of its borders, the politician-turned-political commentator said in general he doesn’t see that “dichotomy” among the evangelical community. He says that “it’s pretty adamant” among evangelicals that “there ought to be one city (Jerusalem). There ought to be a Jewish state and it ought to be secured.”

“One of the things I find most interesting is, generally, evangelicals are so much more supportive of Israel than the American Jewish community,” Huckabee said.

But while Huckabee and other Christian Zionists claim to speak for the evangelical community, a growing number of the community’s leaders are saying that they disagree when it comes to the Israel-Palestinian state debate.

A group of 34 prominent evangelical leaders published a letter in the New York Times voicing support of a two-state solution. In the 2007 letter ad, they stated that both Israel and Palestinians have “legitimate rights” to the land.

They also said they wanted to rectify the “serious misconception” that all American evangelicals are against a two-state solution that creates a new Palestinian state.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” they stated. “We, who sign this letter, represent large numbers of evangelicals throughout the U.S. who support justice for both Israelis and Palestinians.”

Signers included Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary; David Neff, editor of Christianity Today; Richard Stearns, president of World Vision; Stephen Hayner, former president InterVarsity Christian Fellowship; and Joel Hunter, senior pastor of Northland Church in Longwood, Fla., and member of the executive committee of the National Association of Evangelicals.

During the interview, Huckabee also criticized the Obama administration’s new cooler relations with Israel, especially its recent call for Israel to suspend construction in East Jerusalem. He called it a “reversal of policy” not only from the Bush administration, but also of U.S.-Israeli relations under the Clinton administration.

Huckabee may possibly run again for president in the 2012 election.

I agree with Mr. Huckabee. Evangelicals are more supportive of Israel than many U.S. Jews, and the fact saddens me. Repeatedly in the New Testament, Christ and the Apostles tells us we are one people of God. In Colossians 3, Saint Paul clearly states that in Christ there is no Greek or Jew.

I am deeply troubled then when Christians adamantly support one particular ethnic group. In fact, there are more Arab Christians in Israel/Palestine than there are Jewish Christians. How can we tell our Palestinian brothers that we are against them, that the faith we both share compels us to deny them statehood, right of return, and even free movement in the Palestinian territories?

If I could speak with Mr. Huckabee, I'd encourage him to travel to Palestine and meet with the Christians there, especially Palestinian Evangelicals. I'd ask him to talk with them and hear there stories and views; perhaps then he would be less willing to automatically support one group over the other.

    Obama planning to ambush Israel

Several sources have informed One Jerusalem that the Obama Administration is planning to significantly step up the pressure on Israel by announcing a comprehensive plan for Israel and the Palestinians at the opening of the United Nations General in September.

Picture this: The anti-Israel nations of the world surrounding President Obama as he demands that Israel give up sovereignty over Jerusalem, abandon settlements, and recognize a terrorist state on the West Bank.

If this happens, Israel will be isolated from the rest of world in a very dramatic manner. Help stop it by joining One Jerusalem!
The first sign that something was up came when Egyptian President Mubarak said that the Obama Administration was ready to propose a plan in September, and the White House rushed to dampen expectations by declaring that they are nowhere near to readying a plan.

Sources confirmed that the Obama administration is contemplating this ambush of Israel at the United Nations.

At the moment, friends and supporters of Israel can help derail this insidious plan by helping to publicize the intentions of the Obama administration.

    amaranth,

That is alright; I too have done the same thing several times . . .

    O4H,

I'm sorry I misunderstood what you were saying.

    Amaranth,

I hear what you are saying but I never stated that we should turn our backs on or abandon Israel. I was merely clarifying who the true Israel of God is; ONLY those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ . . . these alone are the true children of Abraham according to the New Testament.

    O4H,

God has never turned His back on Israel or the Jews. The Jews have continually been blessed and preserved by God. Granted, as their country moves more towards secularism, the blessings have slowed, but God has never abandoned them and we (as Christians) shouldn't abandon them, either. Christianity would not exist without Judaism and many Christians these days do not fully appreciate the culture of these people. We need to support their continued independence in order for them to maintain the only true democracy in the middle east. More and more Jews are coming to Christ through the witnessing of Christians who have chosen to meet them where they are by going to Israel and living alongside them and helping them - by being a witness of Christ's love for them.

(It deeply saddens and troubles me to hear people (especially those claiming to be Christians) say that the Jews do not deserve to be able to exist in the historical land of their ancestors)

On this point I agree; the land was given to ancient Israel as promised; they physically inherited the land when they came out of Egypt, however, I do not agree that present day Israelis or the nation of Israel as a whole are the chosen people of God. The New Testament makes it abundantly clear as to who is the Israel of God:

In fact, the bible actually speaks of TWO Israels; one according to the flesh and one according to the Spirit. Consider the following passages which truly identify the Israel of God:

“Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they ARE NOT all Israel, which ARE OF Israel: (Romans 9:6).

"That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these ARE NOT the children of God: but the children of the PROMISE are counted for the seed" (Romans 9:8).

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all ONE in Christ Jesus. And IF YE BE Christ's, THEN ARE YE Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:28-29).

This seems to be in harmony with what Jesus told the nation of Israel:

“Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be TAKEN FROM YOU, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder (Matthew 21:42-44).

Today, most of Israel lies in a state of unbelief (the flesh) by denying that Jesus is the Messiah; again, we read. . . "Know ye therefore that they which are of FAITH, the SAME ARE the children of Abraham (Galatians 3:7).

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the ISRAEL OF GOD (Galatians 6:15-16).

So, according to the New Testament we see that ONLY THOSE who are of the household OF FAITH (faith in Christ) are counted as the children of Abraham and constitute the Israel of God. . .

Wow, Diana626! What "Gospel" are you reading that says it's ok to abandon Israel and her people when they need support? The Jews are God's chosen people and He has repeatedly returned them to the land that He promised them. They have a consistent and historical claim to that land that no other group can even attempt to argue.

It deeply saddens and troubles me to hear people (especially those claiming to be Christians)say that the Jews do not deserve to be able to exist in the historical land of their ancestors.

Diana 26: Your post surpasses historical irony - posted on the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Wilberforce, the leading light of his era of the abolition movement; AND a leading Christian Restorationist (Zionist): it would repay visiting the history of this prophetic movement before making such dismissive pronouncements on its 21c, direct successors. The Gospel both was and is central to its focus. Israel's finest hour is yet to come, as the prophets foretold - Zechariah 16:14 -"And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship The King, The L-RD of Hosts, and to keep the Festival of Tabernacles."

What a presumptuous statement by Mr. Huckabee.

  • Tue Aug 25, 2009 9:01 pm Agree: 4   Disagree: 3

He's correct. American Evangelical Christendom is so supportive of Israel that they have compromised and/or forgotten the Gospel.

Their support for Israel is for naught...

Oh please. Christains in America do not support Israel because of end-times prophecy. Someone else tried to say that too and these Christian 'zionists' are a scattered few.

We support Israel because Jews were the ones given that land by God. They have a historical claim to that land that pre-dates the muslims. As we read our Bibles about the many plights of the Holy Land it reminds us that God commanded His temple be built there and that He gave the land to the Jews.

Many Christians today believe that the 'temple' that shall be defiled is within the body of the church, namely His people.

I think many of us suspect this new turn toward accepting gay sex as ok by God as being an 'abomination of desolation' set up within the Church where man has proclaimed himself God and have therefore 'put an end to sacrafices' as we are not longer required to sacrifice 'self' and 'sin' to be Christian...according to these pro-gay churched.
