Luther dies – Feb. 18, 1546
The writer, preacher, reformer, theologian and controversial religious figure Martin Luther would die on the early morning of Feb. 18, 1546, not long after suffering a heart attack.
Luther’s death was detailed by Justus Jonas, who served as his deathbed confessor and affirmed from the Reformation leader that he reaffirmed his beliefs and confessed his sins.

“Jonas recorded that Luther’s last hours were lucid and conscious. He confessed his sins and affirmed his faith in Christ, along with everything else that he had taught,” wrote Jack Kilcrease of Lutheran Reformation.org.
“In light of his faith in Christ, Luther was able to confess the truth of the Gospel on his deathbed. In this, he serves as an enduring model of faith and Christian freedom.”
