2016 Tony Awards Gives 'Hamilton' Record-breaking 16 Nominations

In what could be the most spectacular year in Broadway history, "Hamilton" has received 16 nominations for the 70th Annual Tony Awards.

The Washington Post says this is the first time that any theatrical show has been nominated for almost every category save for a few. The musical's domination in this Broadway season has received praise across the globe as fans wait for the June 12 telecast to take place.

"Hamilton" has beaten previous records made by "The Producers" and "Billy Elliot the Musical," which both obtained 15 nominations in 2001 and 2009 respectively. So far, no critic has said anything against the nominations, further resonating the fandom that the theatrical show has gained over the past month.

According to The New York Times, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show's creator and star, said of the honors, "It's unbelievable - it's absolutely humbling and incredible." Miranda has been nominated in three categories where he is set to compete with a co-star for one of the awards.

Michael Arden, whose direction for a "Spring Awakening" revival received a spot in the list of competing winners, said, "When you look at Broadway and Hollywood, it's clear who's leading. This is one of the strongest seasons I've seen in years."

Meanwhile, there is a lot of excitement among stars and critics who slammed this year's Academy Awards. Variety notes that the 2016 Tony Awards is the most diverse yet in the event's history.

It is already expected that the theater series, which tackles the life and death of Alexander Hamilton and the American people in general, will take home bunches of trophies during the awards' night.

When #OscarsSoWhite dominated social media earlier this year, there were fears that upcoming awarding ceremonies will follow the Academy's path but it seems that June 12's big night is seeking to make its own hashtags trend including #TonysNotSoWhite.

The 70th Annual Tony Awards will be held at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on June 12, 2016.
