2017 Subaru BRZ Review & Update: 5 New Upgrades to Watch Out For

The Subaru people have not been very benevolent when it comes to heeding the call of some gearheads to make significant changes on the Subaru BRZ. Since it was first launched back in 2012, there hasn't been any major upgrade that was rolled out. But, it seems like the wind of change has swept through Cherry Hill, New Jersey this 2016.

"Subaru of America Inc. today announced a comprehensive update to the 2017 BRZ including improved handling, increased performance, more aggressive styling and new convenience features," reads the news release from the automaker company.

"These enhancements continue the company's original mission of offering enthusiasts a pure sports car with an unmatched driving experience. The BRZ, known for its ultra-low center of gravity and precision handling, offers several updates to increase its performance on the track and open roads."

Performance and Handling

The 2017 BRZ is now equipped with new coil springs, dampers, and larger rear sway bar to make the vehicle more responsive and stable at the same time. Subaru is also making a name change from "sport" to " track" mode, thanks to its improved stability control systems, as per Auto Blog.

The 2.0-liter engine will also come with a new set of valves, camshaft and cylinder heads for the purpose of lowering friction. And, for the 6-speed manual transmission variant, the output was up from 200 HP to 205 HP, and from 151 lb-ft of torque to 156 lb-ft of torque due to the new aluminum intake manifold and redesigned exhaust manifold.

The Performance Package

Buyers will also have the option to go for the manual transmission Limited model that offers Performance Package. It comes with a SACHS® Performance shock absorbers and a 17-in x 7.5-in black aluminum alloy wheels.

It also features a Brembo® calipers and larger rotors on both front and rear brakes or better stopping power, fade resistance, and pedal feel.

Interior Upgrade

The BRZ will have a new 4.2-inch LCD display alongside the tachometer. The multifunction steering wheel was also updated and now has new audio controls and multi-function display, Auto Week reports.

Exterior Design

The design on the outside can be seen with its sleek-looking front fascia with a new full-LED upgrade. The new headlights were also integrated with Daytime Running Lights (DRL), while the fog lights were converted into LED units.

Safety

This time around, the compact SUBARU BOXER engine will provide for more crush room in front and on the sides, while high-strength front seat frames will deliver added protection against whiplash injury in a rear-end collision.

The latest Subaru BRZ will come in two trims -- the Premium and Limited models. They will become available at dealers starting this coming September, 2016. The Limited version, meanwhile, which will be equipped with the Performance Package will hit the retailers only in the winter of 2017.
