5 Mistakes Christians Make During Worship

If there's one thing in church that should be easy, it should be worship, right? You just show up and praise the glory and power of God with your neighbors.

But, alas, churchgoer, you may be doing it wrong. "How do you get 'worship' wrong?!" you ask. Here are five ways:

Yes, the worship leader does a mean double-strum on his Taylor guitar. And, boy, does that girl sound (and look) a lot like Taylor Swift! But no matter how many lights illuminate them, the worship team is there to facilitate worship of God, not command it for themselves.

2. Be a music critic.

In churches across the nation, the drums are a problem, whether They're too loud! or Why aren't there any drums? So the genre of music doesn't match up with what's in your iPod or 8-track player. The glory of God still supersedes any style of music. So while you're there, think of God on high, not the drum fill that's rattling your nerves.

3. Copyedit the slides.

4. Fret about what your neighbor is doing.

Again, it's about focus. Are you allowing yourself to be distracted by your neighbor falling to their knees or singing out of key? That's between them and God. And to be honest, I don't think God minds pitchy warbling if it's done with the right heart.

5. Think about how you look or sound.

While you might not worry about your neighbors' actions, you ask yourself what they think of you. Am I raising my hands high enough? Are they at the right angle? Should I sing harmony or melody in this chorus?

It's not about the band, your neighbors or you. Sing, wave and dance unto the Lord – and nobody else.
