A Hong Kong man has offered $65 million for someone to marry his daughter. The property and shipping magnate has offered the huge sum to anyone who is able to woo and marry his 33-year-old daughter.

According to the South China Morning Post, Cecil Chao Sze-tsung offered HK$500 million (approximately $65 million) to anyone able to convince his daughter, Gigi Chao, that they are the right person for her.

The man has told the BBC, "It is an inducement to attract someone who has the talent but not the capital to start his own business."

"I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted. Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work."

Some news agencies have reported that the announcement has come just a week after Chao's daughter shocked him with news that she had held a civil partnership ceremony in France with her lesbian partner of seven years, Sean Eav.

However, Chao has rebuked the reports and said that any news that his daughter had been legally joined to a lesbian partner were completely "false."

Same sex marriage is not legally recognized in Hong Kong. In France civil partnerships are performed but not gay marriage.

The father has said that the offer is simply about his daughter finding a "good husband."

He has added that he would never force his daughter to marry anyone against her will.
