Acer Predator 21 X First Look: Monstrous Gaming Laptop Boasts First Curved Monitor; Features and Price Details

Top-level specs make for an 8-kilogram machine.

The IFA 2016 in Europe is making rounds again the past week, breaking the Internet with new versions of smartphones, laptops and smartwatches. The game is all about convenience this year, with brands trying to top each other with smaller and lighter gizmos.

Electronics mogul Acer had been indecisive on that regard. While it did unveil the world's thinnest laptop, the less-than-1cm-thick Acer Swift 7, it let lose a 17.6-pound—2-kilogram—monster.

The Acer Predator 21 X is making a strong statement to the vast gaming community with its host of features and specifications.

Most powerful laptop?

The most noticeable thing on the Predator 21 X's resume is its curved Nvidia G-Sync screen. It is a first in the laptop business, although curved monitors and TVs had been sold by Acer itself and other brands in the past. The laptop also has a 21-inch (2560 x 1080) IPS display.

With a huge, curved display like Predator 21 X has, it should also offer the best graphics in the industry. Lo and behold, it also has two powerful GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs in Scalable Link Interface (SLI). These specs allow the laptop to be virtual reality-ready.

That's not all in terms of the monitor, either. It also features eye-tracking by Tobii, which allows players to virtually look around paths and aim weapons. This can come in handy when playing first-person shooters.

Gamers' delight

Enough about the monitor, because Predator is not finished with giving users the full gaming experience. Want the sounds to go with the sights? Enter its four speakers and two subwoofers, comprising the 4.2 channel audio system.

Bored at the usual keys? The Predator comes equipped with its own mechanical keyboard, complete with Cherry MX mechanical switches and RGB led under each key. Yes, the keyboard illuminates itself.

Just in case someone would think about what ticks inside the visual and auditory prowess of this beast, even the machine parts itself are impressive. Predator 21 X runs on the latest Intel Core Kaby Lake processors, which are not only fast but also uses the batteries more efficiently.

This is a necessary addition, as the laptop requires two power supplies to work, and, naturally, five cooling fans and eight heatpipes. It can also pack up to 64GB RAM, and handle five storage devices at once.

All these features, however, would not come cheap. The Predator 21 X is set to hit the shelves around the first quarter of 2017, priced around $5,000.
