Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), who is going up against Democrat Patrick Murphy for re-election this November, has released an ad linking his opponent to Democrats saying "no to God" three times at the national convention in Charlotte, N.C.
The Democrats had initially decided to remove the word "God" from their party platform, but then decided to vote on the matter during the convention on Wednesday. Convention chairman, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa put it up for vote three times on the convention floor, and amid seemingly split responses, at the end delegates finally decided to amend their party platform and reinsert "God" as well as affirm Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
"Three times they said no to God," the on-screen text in West's ad says.
"That's Patrick Murphy's party. Are those your values?" it continues, referring to West's challenger, Murphy.
West, 51, took office in Jan. 2011. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel, and is a notable member of the Tea Party.
Murphy, who serves as Vice President of Coastal Environmental Services, has responded to the add in a statement on his campaign website by stating: "How dare Allen West question my faith."
He continued: "This deeply offensive ad is not in the spirit of American political discourse and inappropriately attempts to assign guilt by association. Once again, Allen West has crossed a line with this hateful ad. His campaign tactics are reprehensible and not befitting a Member of Congress."
Murphy for Congress communications director Erin Moffet added: "Patrick Murphy had nothing whatsoever to do with the DNC platform, and strenuously disagreed with language omitted on Jerusalem and God – and was glad to see immediate changes made to incorporate these important planks."
Moffet remarked that West had "desperately launched a personal and unfounded attack on Patrick Murphy to distract from his own embarrassing record and statements."
According to a poll in May, both candidates are tied at 45 percent for U.S. Congress in district 18.
