AMD Ryzen 5 Specs: Ryzen 5 1600 Outperforms Intel Core i7-7700K, But Not for Gaming

Advanced Micro Devices' Ryzen 5 series of processors are set to be released within the upcoming week, but thanks to the availability of free samples that are already sold through eBay, early testings are already indicating that the CPU processor outperforms the Intel Core i7-7700K.

With a base clock of 3.2GHz, the Ryzen 5 - with its 6-core/12-thread architecture - still outperforms the Intel Core i7 even when it was overclocked to 4.9GHz.

One of the advantages of AMD's Ryzen 5 is that even though it has a lower base clock than Intel, it contains six cores and 12 threads, compared to the Core i7-7700K which only had four six physical cores and eight threads.

Once it is released, the Ryzen 5 will come in four different variants - the quad-core/8-thread 1400 and 1500X, plus the six-core/12-thread 1600 and the 1600X variant.

Testers from HardOCP (via TechSpot) were more satisfied with the Ryzen 5 1600 since it is reportedly more stable and consistent, plus it is easier to set up. The processor was stable at 4.0GHz at 3,200MHz RAM after hours of testing.

The Ryzen 5 1400 processors were also tested and became stable at 3.9GHz. When it was pushed to 4GHz, it could only run at that rate consistently for an hour.

Testers also warned that overclocking these processors can overheat them really quickly. "Once you get past 3.8 GHz on these processors, the voltage usage and heat emitted just gets exponential with them. So they get very hot, very quickly," they said, according to TechSpot.

Unfortunately, however, the Ryzen still pales in comparison to Intel's CPU processors when it comes to gaming. In a report from Forbes, the Ryzen 5 1600 is even outperformed by the Core i7-7700K's predecessor, the Core i7-6700K, when it was tested for games such as "Rise of the Tomb Raider," and "Doom."

Still, the good news is that the Ryzen 5 1600 will be available at $232, which is a much lower price than that of the iCore 7700K, which is currently pegged at $350.

The upcoming Ryzen 5 series will be officially released on Tuesday, April 11.
