AMD Vega GPU vs GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Specs, Price Review: Can AMD's New GPU Take On NVIDIA?

NVIDIA recently released its latest high-end graphics processing unit (GPU), the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, and AMD is expected to respond very soon with the upcoming launch of its next-generation GPU, the Radeon RX Vega. Will AMD be able to match up against NVIDIA's latest high-powered product line?

Similar to the Titan X, NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080 Ti uses the GP102 core architecture, with up to 3,584 CUDA cores. It ships with 11 GB of GDDR5X video random-access memory (VRAM). The graphics card has a typical boost clock of 1.6 GHz and overclocks up to 2 GHz. It also comes with an increased maximum power rating of 250 Watts, churning out 11.5 teraflops.

Though the GTX 1080 Ti has arrived packed with a lot of power, speculations now claim that AMD's Radeon RX Vega could actually have a higher performance of as much as 20 to 45 percent compared to NVIDIA's latest GPU.

While the actual specs and features of the AMD Radeon RX Vega have yet to be released, a recently leaked benchmark test reveals what potential buyers and users can expect from AMD's upcoming GPU.

According to the benchmark test, the AMD Vega GPU will come with 8 GB of high bandwidth memory 2 (HBM2) with a 2,048-bit memory configuration. This includes two HMB2 stacks possessing 4 GB each as well as a 1,024-bit memory interface. The graphics card will reportedly also arrive with 4,096 stream processors, which is allegedly fast enough to outperform the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

AMD's upcoming GPU is also expected to be launched with 12 teraflops of 16-bit compute units. It will also be using the 14nm FinFET architecture.

Aside from their specs and features, the tense competition between NVIDIA and AMD's graphics cards could boil down to their price. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is currently available at price of $699. While AMD has yet to reveal the actual price of the forthcoming Radeon RX Vega, the company may sell it at a fraction of the GTX 1080 Ti's price tag.

NVIDIA has the lion's share of the GPU market, and with the upcoming release of the Radeon RX Vega, it will finally be determined if AMD will manage to surpass NVIDIA and become the new leading provider of graphics cards.
