Amputee Killed by Dogs: Pit Bulls Drag 80-Year-Old From Wheelchair in Horrific Attack (VIDEO)

An amputee has been killed by dogs in a horrific attack in South Carolina, according to reports.

80-year-old double-amputee, Carlton Freeman of Harleyville was attacked by four dogs as he was driving along on his motorized wheelchair last week. According to Major John Garrison, a spokesman for the Dorchester County Sheriff's Department, the dogs were pit bulls.

Freeman had both his legs amputated at the knee years ago after suffering health issues with diabetes. However, on May 8 he was helpless as he was attacked by the four dogs, who left him with bites all over his body and critical injuries.

The victim was dragged off his wheelchair by his legs after the dogs grabbed him. On the floor they continued their savage attack, and although he was said to have tried to fight them off, he was unable to fight off all four dogs.

In the aftermath of the attack Freeman was still alive, and he described the attack to emergency services, explaining that the dogs bit him and pulled at his clothing from all angles. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment but died on Sunday after he succumbed to his horrific injuries.

"Upon my examination of Mr. Freeman, it is a wonder that this gentleman was able to hang on as long as he did," said Coronor Chris Nesbit in a statement. "He had bites and lacerations from his legs to the top of his head. This is very sad story, but even worse that Mr. Freeman was basically helpless to the attack, due to being a bi-lateral amputee."

Since the attack, three of the four dogs that attacked Freeman have been caught, and have been transferred to an animal shelter. The fourth dog remains at large.

The three dogs that were captured were reported to have had traces of blood on them, thought to be that of Freeman. The dogs belonged to a woman in the neighborhood - 61-year-old Barbara Goodwin.

No arrests have been made in the case so far.
