"Thank you to members of the Academy, and to my dear friends for your kind words, to my hero, Louie Zamperini…" she continued. "And most of all to my family. My love- your support and your guidance make everything I do possible, Mad, I'm not gonna cry I promise, I won't embarrass you, you and your brothers and sisters are my happiness, and there is not greater honor in this world than being your mother."

The actress went on to cite the beginning of her career and how much has changed since then.

"I came into this business young, worried about my own experiences and my own pain," she said. "It was only when I began to travel and look and live beyond my home that I understood my responsibility to others."

Another excerpt from Jolie's speech is below.

"I don't understand why I have this life and a woman across the world who has the same work ethic, same desires, and would make better films is stuck in a refugee camp. She has no voice. She worries about what her children would eat, how to keep them safe and if they can return home. I don't know why this is my life and that is hers. I don't understand. But I will do my best to be in service to them. Of my mother was alive she would be proud."

Meanwhile, Jolie became the youngest person and the seventh woman to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. It is the latest accolade for the actress, who earned in Oscar in 2000 for her role in "Girl, Interrupted."

Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin and Italian costume designer Piero Tosi also received annual lifetime-achievement awards on Saturday.

In addition to Jolie's work with organizations such as the UN and the Council on Foreign Relations, the actress has begun production on her latest directorial project, "Unbroken."

The starlet and Pitt are parents to six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox.
