Nigerian Anglican Bishop Kidnapped, Held for Ransom

An Anglican bishop in Nigeria's southern state of Edo was kidnapped Sunday after mass, reported a Christian leader on Monday.

The Rev. Peter Imasuen, who is bishop of Edo's state capital, Benin City, was reportedly ambushed and seized as he arrived home from church on Sunday.

"We were told he was kidnapped yesterday," Samuel Salifu, secretary general of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), told Agence France-Presse.

"We are trying to establish what exactly happened but we understand the kidnappers are asking for 15 million naira (about 100,000 dollars)," he added.

Imasuen's abduction comes just a week after clashes between Muslims and Christians left nearly 500 people dead in and around the central city of Jos.

Imasuen was CAN chairman for Edo State.
