'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Release Date, Cast News: Scarlett Johansson Reveals Black Widow's Dark Past

Scarlett Johansson, who plays the Black Widow in Marvel's Avengers movies, recently revealed her character's backstory will be unveiled in "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Moviegoers will get to know more about Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, when "Avengers: Age of Ultron" premieres in North America on May 1, Scarlett Johansson, the actress who plays the deadly Russian redhead disclosed.

Johansson, whose character was first introduced in "Iron Man 2" in 2010, admits she researched Black Widow heavily prior to doing the role.

"I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me," she told W Magazine. "She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel, you learn more about the sadness in her past."

Describing the Black Widow as a small but strong superhero who also happens to be human, Johansson says "Avengers: Age of Ultron" will see Natasha Romanoff's story unfold on the big screen.

Fans of the predominantly male superhero Avengers movies already know that Romanoff is Russian ("Iron Man 2), trained as an assassin beginning at the age of five ("The Avengers"), has no moral compunctions whatsoever ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier"), and is generally lethal with her vice-like thighs.

The ongoing mini-series "Agent Carter" on ABC has already laid down the foundation for Natasha Romanoff's backstory in preparation for the "Avengers" sequel in May, leading fans to anticipate who or what exactly may have made the Black Widow the person she is.

Fans have broached the possibility of the Black Widow getting her own solo movie spin-off, and while Marvel hasn't disclosed any plans of producing a standalone Natasha Romanoff film, Johansson is enthusiastic over the premise.

"If you want to see a Black Widow spin-off movie, then I want to see it. We'll see. We will put the request into Marvel tomorrow," Johansson said at the premiere for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" in London last year.
