'Baby Driver': Edgar Wright Confesses the Music Came Before the Film

Most adrenaline-pumping car chase films are focused on the action and explosions and then they think of some badass music to further accentuate the moment. For Edgar Wright's "Baby Driver," however, he admitted that it was actually the other way around, and the result was something everyone is beginning to love.

In a room filled with reporters prior to unveiling the film in the South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, Wright shared how the vision started and how he picked the people for it. As per Screen Rant, he daydreamed about the project 22 years ago while listening to the John Spencer Explosion track "Bellbottoms."

"I just listened to that song over and over again, and I just thought, 'That would make a great car chase song,'" Wright recalls. "I sort of started to visualize the car chase to that song. I didn't really have what the rest of the idea was. And then I started to think of the idea of a getaway driver that cannot really operate without the right music playing, like a soundtrack."

The idea then grew through the years, and slowly he began imagining the score while creating the script, making both elements blend together. It was a painstaking process, but considering his passion, it was very much worth it.

As far as casting Ansel Elgort as Baby, he was an automatic favorite for many reasons. Wright explains that aside from the fact that Elgort is musically inclined, he is a fresh-faced young actor, making him the perfect pick.

The journey in creating the film took a long time, but its fruits speak for itself. Even before its release, Rotten Tomatoes has already given the movie a whopping 100 percent, which says a lot about how much people are growing fond in anticipation of the potential masterpiece.

"Baby Driver" races and drifts into theaters on Aug. 11, 2017.
