'Batman' Standalone Movie News, Rumors: Ben Affleck to Write and Direct a Dark Knight Follow-Up Film

Days ahead of his appearance at this weekend's Warner Bros. San Diego Comic-Con panel presentation, star of the upcoming "Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice" Ben Affleck, is allegedly in talks to star, co-write, and direct a standalone movie featuring the Dark Knight.

A report from Entertainment Weekly points out the article from Deadline.com saying that the 42-year-old actor will be co-writing the purported film with DC Entertainment's comic writer and chief creative officer Geoff Johns.

The story, according to the publication, would be set after the events of 2016's "Dawn of Justice" and the 2017 tentpole "Justice League," which is slated to unite the DC superheroes in one big screen offering, just like Marvel's Avengers.

Sources for the media outlet tipped that the two who have "really found their rhythm" while working together, "are likely to turn in a script before the end of summer." This would come after Affleck's adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel, "Live by Night." The "Gone Girl" star has to postpone the project to star in "Batman V. Superman."

If this project will push through, it will be Johns' first feature film writing credit, although he has written a number of episodes for The CW's "Arrow" and "The Flash" as well as for CBS' upcoming "Supergirl."

With a long list of superhero flicks lined up for the forthcoming years, it remains to be seen how Affleck's Batfilm fits into the slate.

"Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice" is expected to open in theaters March 25, 2016.
