'Batman v Superman' News, Spoilers: New Batman Will Be Undergoing 'An Existential Crisis,' Ben Affleck Reveals

The iconic role of Batman has been played numerous times on the big screen by such legendary actors as George Clooney, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, and Val Kilmer, so to set the latest incarnation of the Caped Crusader apart from his predecessors in Hollywood, Ben Affleck (the new Batman) and "Batman v Superman" director Zack Snyder had to dig deep and come up with something fresh for Dark Knight fans.

According to ComicBook.com, for "Dawn of Justice," Affleck and Snyder came up with what Affleck described as a Batman who is "kind of burnt out and asking himself what the point of it all was and going through an existential crisis."

The new Batman won't be the melancholic hero coming to grips with his parents' murder nor a vigilante. In "Batman v Superman," fans will meet a seasoned hero, an older Caped Crusader on a quest against injustice. After witnessing the aftermath of Superman and General Zod's battle (as depicted in "Man of Steel"), he will be intent on doing anything he can to prevent a second round of death and destruction.

"You can see the idea of the innocent being victimized by whatever they are, aliens, he doesn't know — that's the thing that really boils his blood, as you can imagine it would," Snyder told USA Today. "Suddenly the innocent children of the world are all of us."

Meanwhile, Affleck has an interesting take on what playing the role of Batman entails, saying, "You can't really play Batman because Batman is different things to different people." According to the actor, everyone projects his or her own idea of Batman onto the mythology of the character; thus, Batman has to be played as someone who can be projected upon. Meanwhile, with Bruce Wayne, an actor can experiment, "bring something distinct and new and different," he explained.

Apart from Batman (Affleck), the highly anticipated "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" also stars Justice League superheroes Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller).

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" lands in theaters on March 25.
