'Battlestar Galactica' Movie In The Works At Universal Studios

News about doing a big-screen adaptation of the cult classic "Battlestar Galactica" have been around for quite some time and most of it have not amounted to much, until recently. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Studios is taking the project seriously especially after signing on some big name producers such as Dylan Clark of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Michael De Luca of "The Social Network," and Scott Stuber of "Ted."

In addition to them, it was also reported that Bryan Singer of the "X-Men" was once going to be part of it, either as a producer or as a director, but according to THR, Singer hasn't been involved in the project since 2014.

"Battlestar Galactica" is a fan-favorite science fiction franchise which became widely popular in the late 1970s and later on from 2004 to 2009 because of several television series that chronicled the human race's struggle against a cybernetic race called the Cylons.

In a report in The Guardian, it was in 2009 that Singer was said to have signed on to direct the film, but development did not progress beyond that. It is about a group of humans on board a gigantic spacecraft carrier and battleship called Battlestar Galactica and their quest to look for a mythical planet called Earth.

Universal Studios, according to the report, is keen on taking the development to the next level as they are eyeing to have a franchise that will possibly compete with the other huge sci-fi franchise, "Star Wars." Aside from "Star Wars," other sci-fi films are also in play with "Star Trek" and "Avatar" movies coming soon.

Among the decisions that the film's director and producers have to make is how to treat the film adaptation vis-à-vis the original TV series – will it feature a "retro approach" or will it be a "reboot" of the franchise?
