Baylor's President Presides Over His Final Commencement

More than 1,800 graduates were honored at Baylor University (BU) on May 14 at the final commencement presided by President Robert B. Sloan Jr.

Sloan, whose controversial implementation of Baylor 2012 - a 10-year vision plan of the Waco, Texas Baptist institution - led to his resignation last January. Sloan will become to chancellor on June 1.

This year, a record of 283 students graduated with advanced degrees - with Baylor’s granting its first doctorate in philosophy, and its second and third doctorate degrees in biology.

Dr. Larry Lyon, Dean of the Graduate School and Senior Vice Provost, told the university press that the growing number of advanced degree programs and graduates reflects the success of Baylor 2012.

"Baylor 2012 calls for enhanced graduate education at Baylor as a way of strengthening the entire university," Lyon said. "As Baylor graduate programs grow slightly in enrollment and considerably in complexity, the academic visibility and reputation of the university grows as well."

Baylor held two spring graduation ceremonies on this day - one for the College of Arts and Sciences in the morning and one for the Schools of Business, Engineering and Computer Science, Education, Music and Nursing and Truett Seminary in the afternoon.

Baylor University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Texas, and the currently largest Baptist University in the world.
