Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's 'Project Greenlight' Canceled in HBO, News and Updates

HBO's "Project Greenlight" ran for four seasons and has been in the small screen since 2001. The show transferred to Bravo for a while during its third season and back to HBO in 2015 for season 4. However, a recent report indicated that the docu-series was canceled by HBO just this month.

What Happened?

According to reports, when Matt Damon and producer Effie Brown disagreed over the issue of diversity, the fourth season of "Project Greenlight" became controversial. In fact, when Brown wanted more diversity behind the camera, Damon stated that it was done only for movie castings and not for casting in a show.

In a statement made by HBO, it decided that the show did not make sense anymore in the early parts of 2016 though the series premiered in 2001 to give new filmmakers a chance to develop a movie under Damon and Affleck's guidance,

However, in an interview with The New York Times, Damon clarified that the idea he wanted to convey was that there was no need for more diversity behind the camera.

The Controversy

Although the controversy is still on for the show, Damon is committed to get a new home for the series. He said that the show went great and that they are shopping for other streaming networks like Amazon and Netflix.

In another statement, Damon noted that "Project Greenlight" works, and ever since it was launched, careers have been built up and sustained. These careers are direct results of the show. Some personalities he mentioned who were products of the show are Pete Jones, John Gulager, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. He added that these personalities have been doing great things in Hollywood and that both he and Ben Affleck have been very proud of the outcome.

Damon also indicated in a report that they do not question the programming. In fact, everything in the show has been good. However, they have to take the series somewhere else to keep it running.

"Project Greenlight" is a documentary television series that focuses on first-time filmmakers who are given the chance to direct a feature film. The show is created by Alex Keledjian and developed by Eli Holzman. The producers of the series are LivePlanet, a company owned by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Sean Bailey and Chris Moore, and Miramax Films.
