'Big Little Lies' Renewed or Canceled? Encouraging Signs for Season 2 Surface After Emmy Coup

"Big Little Lies" Season 2 has been the talk around HBO even before the show clinched eight Emmy wins. After the awards sweep last Sunday, a second run for the acclaimed show looks more likely than ever.

Getting a new season of "Big Little Lies" off the ground needs a lot of things to come together, however. One roadblock is the lack of follow-up material for the "Big Little Lies" novel by Liane Moriarty, who wrote the book as a one-and-done material.

It's been rumored that Moriarty has since been approached by HBO and the show's producers for more material, and a short novella may be coming, according to Deadline. Moriarty's new work could follow the main characters after the events of the first season.

Sunday's bounty helped things along for Moriarty, as seeing the pile of awards inspired her "even more to write a follow-up and second season."

It's also reported that David E. Kelley now has a possible angle to the new material, encouraging everyone including HBO programming president Casey Bloys. Even with a new story, however, the star-studded cast need to get their schedule aligned.

"I think a second installment, before tonight and after tonight, still depends on Reese, Nicole, David, Laura and everybody being excited about the idea," Bloys said at a post-awards party on Sep. 17.

Kidman, at least, was sad to see the first season end, as she confided to Vulture in an interview last March. "I was so sad to say good-bye because we all became very, very close," she said as the show wrapped up by then.

Witherspoon, as well, looks to be amenable for another installment of "Big Little Lies," if only to get together again with "the greatest ensemble I've ever [worked with]," as she described the cast in a January interview with TV Line.
