Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ is Good News

The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is good news. We have been called to proclaim this good news to others so that they may believe. We have been called to live out this good news so that our communities may be transformed. We have been called to be God's agents to bring justice where injustice reigns and mediate life and healing where death and suffering are the order of the day, to bring peace with justice where conflict and oppression strangle many people.

"Here am I, the servant of the Lord;
let it be with me according to your word." (Luke: 1.38)

Merry Christmas,

All too soon, another calendar year is coming to an end. Another Christian year has begun with Advent. As we get into the spirit of Christmas we continue to anticipate the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2010 has been a real, eventful year. We continue to celebrate the unity that has brought into being the World Communion of Reformed Churches. We thank God for the General Council and all whose prayers and gifts of time and resources made it possible for us to have a successful Uniting General Council.

As we celebrate Christmas this year, I have been reflecting on the young lady who received a visit from the angel Gabriel in which she was given the message that she was going to be the mother of the Messiah. Challenging and puzzling as this message was, her answer was, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it bewith me according to your word".

My prayer is that we too can enter into the Christmas spirit with that attitude.

We can either remain silent and inactive in the light of the challenges surrounding us, or as people touched by the Christmas spirit adopt the attitude of Mary, responding with willingness to be God's agents in taking up whatever challenge we are faced with – "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word".

May this Christmas be special as we offer ourselves to God, to be willing and effective agents of God's mission in our communities.

The President of WCRC, Rev. Dr. Jerry Pillay, my wife Akpene, and my colleagues here in Geneva join me in wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2011.

Merry Christmas,

Rev. Dr Setri Nyomi
General Secretary
World Communion of Reformed Churches
