'Black Panther' News: Marvel Signs Chadwick Boseman for 5-Picture Deal as Black Panther

Most people have not heard of Chadwick Boseman. The actor was lauded by critics for his portrayal of Jackie Robinson in "42," and in August 2014, he turned in another believable performance as James Brown in "Get On Up" which generated a lot of Oscar buzz.

However, Boseman is about to become a household name as Marvel has just announced on Tuesday that he has signed on to star as the superhero Black Panther in five films, starting with "Captain America: Civil War" which will be released on May 6, 2017, followed by a Black Panther film on Nov. 3, 2017. The announcement was made at the Marvel fan event at Disney's El Capitan Theater.

Regarding Black Panther's appearance on "Captain America," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said, "He will have a big role." Feige also said that he was happy that Boseman's casting did not leak the way that the trailer for "Avengers: Age of Ultron" did a week ago. The trailer for Marvel's upcoming movie leaked online a week earlier than its planned release on ABC's "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD."

To pair with the announcement, Marvel Studios also officially unveiled a first look at Black Panther's costume. The costume, which was rendered in concept art form, shows Black Panther entirely covered in a skintight costume from head to foot, with some spike-like detailing around the neck.

After Black Panther's standalone movie, Boseman's character is also expected to join the rest of the Avengers in sequels to that franchise, which are being broken up into two films in 2018 and 2019.
