'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5: HBO Wrapping Up Series With Dramatic Finale Season

After its best season to date, HBO and series creator Terrence Winter ("The Wolf of Wall Street") have decided that they will bring the 1920s-era drama "Boardwalk Empire' to its conclusion with season 5 this coming September.

The announcement was made at the TCA panel earlier this year.

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages," Michael Lombardo, president of programming at HBO, explained.

Though there was no specific reason given for why the show was ending with season 5, experts are pointing out that it could not be due to low ratings, as the show did well in season 4, albeit not as well as "Game of Thrones" and "True Blood." And though major awards eluded the series during its run, Bobby Cannavale did win a Best Supporting Actor Emmy award for his portrayal of Gyp Rosetti in Season 3.

Another theory as to why Winter and HBO have come to an amicable decision on when to close the show is that they are supposedly set to work on another period drama, this time set in the 1970's. Though there has not been an official announcement yet, it is being reported by Screenrant that the show will be a rock and roll series. Winter will supposedly be collaborating with Martin Scorsese, and the show is rumored to be produced by Mick Jagger. Cannavale is reportedly attached to the new project and is being considered to play the lead role.

As for 'Boardwalk Empire', Winter said that season 5 will have eight episodes, and the ending is expected to be "unforgiving," especially for the characters who stand to pay the price for their actions.

The premiere of "Boardwalk Empire" Season 5 will air on Sept. 7 on HBO.
