'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5 Premiere Date, Spoilers: New Season Features 7-Year Jump Into the Great Depression

Earlier this year, HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo announced that the 1920s Prohibition era drama "Boardwalk Empire" will now come to its conclusion in its upcoming fifth season which will premiere in September.

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages," Lombardo said in a Television Critics Association panel discussion.

Numerous speculation gathered steam since the announcement with regards to the specific reason why the period drama is now coming to its end. For one sure thing though, it isn't about the ratings. Season 4 could be one of the show's proudest moments after having garnered awards and nominations as well as positive reviews from viewers.

As what has been revealed by people in the know, Winter and the cable channel are actually in the works for another period drama. Although details aren't disclosed yet, it is rumored to take place in the 1970s.

As for "Boardwalk Empire," season 5 will see a huge seven-year jump from the prohibition period of the 1920s to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

"The storyline has jumped seven years [into the future], which is why I have the beard now," Michael K. Williams, who plays Albert "Chalky" White, explained. "The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone.

Historically speaking, this would be one year away from which Franklin D. Roosevelt would take office, an event that would spell doom to Steve Buscemi's Enoch "Nucky' Thompson, a Republican.

"Boardwalk Empire" Season 5 will return with its premiere episode entitled "Golden Days for Boys and Girls" on Sept. 7 on HBO.
