A Brazilian actor has suffered brain injuries after accidentally hanging himself during a theatrical performance as he played the part of Judas in a Passion of Christ play. The accident took place on Good Friday in Itarare City in the south-west region of Sao Paulo state.
Actor, Thiago Klimeck, was hanging in one scene in what some thought was part of the performance. It took performers and theater-goers a while before they realized that it was in fact a terrible accident.
It has been reported that the incident caused cerebral anoxia due to a lack of oxygen for an extended amount of time.
Medical examinations revealed stress on the actor's skull. Klimeck, 27, currently remains hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being placed in an induced coma. He requires the help of machines to aid his breathing.
According to witnesses, he may have made an error in using a cord resulting in the horrific accident. However, his family has suspected that the equipment he was using may have had a fault.
People who were watching the scene did not react immediately because they believed that Klimeck was acting. Once they realized the accident, however, other actors triggered the rescue. He was unconscious and in a bad way when he was taken away to hospital, and remains in a serious condition.
In an interview with a Brazilian television program, Domingo Espetacular, one of the policemen who participated in his rescue, described how he noticed that part of the belt was not well attached.
The incident is now being investigated by the local police, and an analysis of the equipment being used by the actor should be ready within 30 days. Following those results the Civil Police will advance their investigations further.
