'Call the Midwife' Season 3 Spoilers: Major Bombshell Announced

"Call the Midwife" is all new this Sunday on PBS, and the nuns and midwives are delving into a new area by working in a prison. There is one developing storyline that will leave viewers in shock at the end of the season and likely catch them by surprise.

Head nurse Jenny Lee received a promotion to "Acting Sister" last week and briefly let the power go to her head before being snapped back into reality by coworker Trixie. It will take all her strength to deal with this week's situation of a baby being born inside a prison and the nurses having to decide if it is better for the child to remain with its mother behind bars or to be separated for a life outside the prison.

"Call the Midwife" is taking a new approach this season and focusing on one particular mother-to-be and how her story directly affects that of the midwife, rather than doing a broader storyline each week. As the season continues, viewers will be able to learn more about a particular midwife or nun. Also, there will be more procedures introduced, as Lamaze and the use of force-ups were last week.

By the end of the season, one midwife will be leaving the show for good in order to pursue a life beyond the small-screen. It will be interesting to see how the writers and producers write her out of the series, given that it has already aired abroad and us Americans are just now in the middle of the season. The series is often compared to "Downton Abbey," and it's clear that the writers of "Call the Midwife" have no problem writing off important characters, just as on "Downton Abbey."

CP will not give away just who left … yet. But stay tuned for more clues and up-to-date information about this bombshell development.

"Call the Midwife" airs Sunday nights on PBS and can also be seen on PBS.org.
