Helen Keller said, "In a word, literature is my Utopia." But did you realize some words can actually give a person eternal life? I am not talking about an imaginary place, but rather, a real paradise in a real place called "heaven." It's true. Perhaps hard for you to believe, but nevertheless true.
There was an occasion when some of the Lord's followers decided to abandon the Messiah and move on to other pursuits. Jesus then asked the twelve, "You don't want to leave too, do you?" Simon Peter responded with these famous words, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (John 6:67,68)
Stop and consider what Peter was saying, and what he wasn't saying. Peter wasn't simply stating that Jesus used the words "eternal" and "life." Nor was Peter merely saying that Jesus helped people imagine what it would be like to live forever. No, Peter was saying something much more profound. Peter was stating that Jesus spoke words which literally give eternal life to people who receive those words in the right way.
Believe it or not, the Lord's words are able to transfer the blessing of eternal life into your possession. This is why the Bible states, "We have this treasure in jars of clay." (2 Cor. 4:7) How did the treasure get inside believers? It came through words. "Faith comes from hearing the message." (Romans 10:17)
So here is how it works. Men and women share the good news about Jesus. The Holy Spirit delivers this message to the heart, and brings people into God's family as they repent and believe the good news.
Jesus is the living Word. (see John 1:1-14) When He speaks, new life is given. And that includes the miracle of eternal life.
When was the last time you thought about life that never ends? Eternity with the Lord in heaven will never be boring, upsetting, painful, or sinful. In a word, it will be "perfect." And to think that believers have been given this amazing gift through words. The words of eternal life are truly priceless.
Why else would Christians love to sing about God's gift of everlasting life? It's because of the treasure which is in us. We have been "given the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come." (2 Cor. 1:22) The Holy Spirit brought us into the family of God, and He will make sure we make it into heaven at the appointed time.
God's love for us is not just a warm and fuzzy feeling. In fact, "God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) Those are words of eternal life. When you believe those words for the forgiveness of your sins, you are given the free gift of everlasting life. That's how it works.
God's Word is supernatural. It does what no other words can even come close to doing. Just think about it for a second. Helpful words from a doctor can at best prolong your life on earth. But what doctor has words that can enable you to live 125 years, let alone forever?
No wonder Jesus is referred to as the Great Physician. His words heal the soul, and that is critical because your soul is immortal.
And when a person trusts Christ and believes His words of eternal life, a lot more than holy words start to flow from within that new believer. Good words are one part of the Christian life, but so also are plenty of other good deeds. The words of God produce a life of kindness, compassion, and humble service. And so the supernatural words of Christ not only bring eternal life into your possession, but they also change you from the inside out.
Can you honestly think of a better way to live? Loving others now, while having the guarantee of everlasting life in heaven through faith in Christ. Miracles are happening everyday as people are meeting the Messiah by placing their confidence for heaven in His death on the cross for them.
Have you received the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ? If not, what are you waiting for? Your body is not getting any younger, and it won't be well with your soul until you are trusting Jesus as your Savior.
Do you want the words of our Lord to give you this everlasting treasure, or not? If so, then turn to the Lord in repentance and simply believe what He says about sin, grace, faith and eternity.
Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25,26) Well, do you?
