Canelo Álvarez vs Gennady Golovkin II News: Rematch Talks Have Started

The bout between Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez and Gennady "GGG" Golovkin didn't really live up to expectations, but it was still an action-packed battle between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today.

Unfortunately, the fight was marred by a controversial draw. Both fighters walked away from the fight several million richer, but they weren't satisfied with the decision because they both thought they did enough to win the bout.

Well, the two champions will get the chance to settle the score, because a potential rematch is already in the works.

Álvarez had a contractual immediate rematch clause put in place before he took on Golovkin, and Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez has confirmed that they intend to exercise it.

"I had conversations with [Golden Boy CEO] Oscar [De La Hoya] on Sunday and Monday, and we feel that's the best thing to do, to go straight into a rematch," Gomez said, via ESPN.

Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler, is open to a rematch as well and he said there should be one because they owe it to the fans.

"Fans are demanding the rematch. They want a clear winner, which we thought was GGG. But I think Gennady and Canelo owe the fans the rematch and, frankly, for the sport of boxing to right to the bad decision we saw last Saturday," Loeffler stated.

Álvarez doesn't want to fight before May 5, 2018, so they will likely have to schedule the rematch on that date. However, Loeffler has noted that the Kazakhstani may take another fight instead if negotiations start to stall. Apparently, they are eyeing Miguel Cotto as a possible opponent this December.

Of course, Golovkin could still fight Álvarez in May if he took another fight later this year, but Loeffler said it's too risky because his fighter might lose or get injured.

Right now, a rematch makes the most sense for both camps and they are working to make it happen.
