'Captain America: Civil War' News: War Machine Has A New Name?

The superhero currently known as War Machine, played by Don Cheadle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, has undergone several name changes over the years and it appears that he will yet again have a new name in the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War."

The first time he put on his iron suit in 2010's "Iron Man 2," Iron Man's good friend and fellow superhero was introduced as War Machine. But after his suit received a wash of red, white, and blue paint in the 2013 film "Iron Man 3," he was renamed Iron Patriot. Then, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" dropped and in it, he was once again known as War Machine.

Now, it seems that name changes are just part and parcel of being James "Rhodey" Rhodes because in 2015's "Civil War," he will again be called by a different name, this time, War Hammer.

The report comes from the magazine Total Film, which will feature the forthcoming "Captain America: Civil War" in its new issue. In a piece of concept art featuring a battle between the members of Team Captain America and Team Iron Man, an accompanying blurb reveals that War Machine has a new moniker. It reads:

"Old Shellhead's greatest ally, War Hammer (Don Cheadle) looks to get into a spot of bother in 'Civil War' - the film's trailer shows his pulverised body being cradled by a distraught Tony. Could this be the end of the line?"

The new name does not occur in the world of the Marvel Comics but is similar to the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000. Though the name could also be meaningless and may have only been employed because it is, as Cinema Blend notes, a little more PR-friendly, it also calls to mind Justin Hammer, Tony Stark's old rival, who was played by actor Sam Rockwell. Hammer hasn't been seen since the Marvel One-Shot "All Hail the King." Perhaps the name War Hammer means that Justin Hammer will reappear in "Civil War?"
