Casey Anthony Homicide Trial: Recap Week 2

The second week of the Casey Anthony murder trial brought forth the testimonies of experts and recorded phone conversations between the defendant and her parents. Anthony, 25, is a Florida woman who is accused of murdering her two-year-daughter Caylee Anthony in June 2008.

The nation is following the daily progress of the case as the prosecution brings forth witnesses, evidence, and tapings to make the case that Anthony killed her daughter by knocking her out with chloroform and wrapping three pieces of duct tape around her nose and mouth.

But the defense claims Caylee accidentally drowned in the family’s pool on June 16, 2008, and George Anthony, Casey’s father, helped the defendant to dispose of the body.

The following is a summary of Week 2 of the trial.

Tuesday, May 31:

Cindy Anthony (Casey’s mother) testified that there was a horrible odor in Casey’s car on July 15, 2008, when the vehicle was retrieved from the tow yard. She affirmed that the smell was like rotting flesh. She recalled that Caylee’s favorite doll was in the car, as well as the toddler’s backpack and Casey’s wallet. Cindy used Febreze and Clorox wipes to try to remove the smell in the car and on the doll.
Jurors also listened to the 911 call that Cindy made to report her granddaughter missing.

Wednesday, June 1:

Lee Anthony (Casey’s brother) testified about the strong smell in Casey’s car and how his sister kept avoiding him and their parents after she stopped bringing Caylee to meet them.

Thursday, June 2:

The jurors listened to taped jail conversations from 2008 when Casey spoke to her family about Caylee as if she was still alive. The real Zenaida Gonzalez took the stand and said she never met Casey Anthony or her daughter Caylee even though Casey had frequently said Zanny the nanny kidnapped her daughter. Jeff Hopkins testified that he was an acquaintance of Casey from middle school, but he is not her ex-boyfriend who introduced her to nanny Zenaida as the defendant claims. Jurors also listened to a nearly 1-hour tape of the interview between Casey and detectives on July 16, 2008, in which the detectives told her to quit lying.

Friday, June 3:

A crime scene investigator testified that the smell in Casey’s car is that of human decomposition. Jurors watch jailhouse video of Casey Anthony talking to her parents in which she dismissed the possibility of Caylee drowning.

Saturday, June 4:

An FBI forensic expert testified that the hair found in Casey’s car was consistent with hair from a dead person. The 9-inch light brown hair found in the car is similar to the one from Caylee’s hair brush and not that of Casey Anthony’s, according to the forensic expert. Prosecutors on Friday said their case is expected to end on June 17.

The trial resumes on Monday, June 6.
