Colorado's 'Gun-Friendly' Dorms Not Popular With Students

The University of Colorado's Colorado Springs and Boulder campuses have established a "gun-friendly" dormitory on their campuses, but allegedly, no students are interested. The dorms would allow students 21 years and older to have their weapons at the school provided they have their concealed-carry gun permits.

One of the main reasons students aren't jumping at the chance to move into the dorms because they feel they are being "segregated. You've proven you're legally, responsibly and morally able to carry [a weapon], then the college comes back and tells you you've got to move. What would you do?" asked David Burnett.

Burnett is a representative of the Students for Concealed Carry group on campus and told the Denver Post he felt that students shouldn't be "segregated" in such a manner. The campus already allows students to store firearms, provided they register with campus police.

It begs the question whether there are students living in traditional dorms and hiding their firearms from campus security. The university's decision breaks tradition and goes against a previous blanket ban on all firearms and weapons on campus.

"I believe we have taken responsible steps to adhere to the ruling of the Colorado Supreme Court, while balancing that with the priority of providing a safe environment for our students, faculty and staff," Chancellor Philip DiStefano said in a statement.

Response to the "gun-friendly" dorm has been varied, with many supporting the move to allow students to carry their weapons, and others fearing that the students could end up hurting their peers accidentally.

"You would think, that even despite America's insistence on maintaining their beloved second amendment, that to allow guns within a university is just asking for trouble given all the history of issues they have with that sort of thing. But no, no, we have a right and we will stick to it like glue," noted Daily Mail reader Christopher.

"We note that in that state (Utah) which has laws allowing guns on all college campuses there have been NO SHOOTINGS. An armed society is a polite society. As for Colorado, if they make rules so onerous and SEGREGATE the gun-owning students, I'm hardly surprised that nobody applied to live there! If a person is a responsible gun owner, they don't go around advertising that they own and carry a gun. They do so quietly and discreetly," argued Garnet.
