This viral video has been uploaded showing a New Jersey cop punching a woman in the face. A police investigation is currently underway into the incident.

An incident where a cop punched a woman has sparked an investigation after a video of the assault was uploaded to video sharing site YouTube.

The video apparently shows a New Jersey cop punching a woman in the face outside of a nightclub.

A New Jersey police department has reportedly launched an investigation into the incident after being made aware of the video.

The video clip has received tens of thousands of views on YouTube already, and Elizabeth Police Department officials have now launched their internal probe into the alleged attack.

The video shows numerous people in a scuffle on the street outside a nightclub, when suddenly a man moves away from the main group. He is followed by a cop who seems to try and grab the man. However, a woman then moves in to intervene, but the cop then turns towards the woman and punches her in the face.

The clip has stunned viewers, and has been widely condemned as an overreaction on the part of the officer and a severe use of excessive force.

The incident reportedly took place outside the popular nightclub, Club Envy in Elizabeth. The cop and the woman who received the punch have not as yet been named publicly.

It is not believed that the cop involved in the assault has been suspended yet, and some publications have stated that he remains on active duty at the moment. However, the results of the internal investigation could lead to action being taken against the officer, especially given the public outcry against the level of force used in the incident.
