'Covert Affairs' Season 5 Spoilers: Premiere Sees A 'Different' Annie, Relationship with Auggie 'Reset'

"Covert Affairs" returns to USA with its fifth season in a premiere episode entitled "Shady Lane."

Ahead of the brand new season, USA released a sneak peek offering five teases about Annie Walker, portrayed by Piper Perabo. "Covert Affairs" fans have not seen Annie since she killed Henry Wilcox and stayed dark for an extra four months. During the season five opener, Annie will come in from the dark under suspicion, but she is immersed once more into the CIA anyway.

Although Annie and Auggie are once again working as handler and operative, their romance has changed since Annie is a different kind of spy now- according to executive producers Matt Corman and Chris Ord.

"[Annie] is facing some major challenges, both personal and professional," Corman told TVLine. "We'll see, right off the bat, we're changing the paradigm a little bit."

The producers noted that Annie has become a better spy, for better or worse.

"We want to honor everything she has been through as we bring her into this new season," Ord explained before Corman pointed out that Annie did not even carry a gun in season one. Yet, in season five, Annie will carry a gun since taking Henry down in a dark alley.

When it comes to Annie's relationship with Auggie, the producers revealed that demands of the job as well as the tolls and challenges spy life are standing in the way of romance. The season premiere will pick up after "a bit of a reset" between the characters.

"The central question on this show has always been, 'Can you separate work and personal life? Can you keep them both compartmentalized,'" Corman asked. "They always bleed into one another and they always challenge and compromise one another. Again, that's the main theme of this season, and we press that in a big way off the bat."

Furthermore, the "Covert Affairs" teaser sees a man from Annie's past under investigation by the government. Annie will confront the man when then reach a startling conclusion during their meeting.

"I'm not most spies," Annie insists during one clip on USANetwork.com.

"Covert Affairs" airs on USA Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EST.
