Deftones bass guitarist Chi Cheng died over the weekend after a 4-year struggle to recover from a car accident.
In 2008, Cheng was left in a coma after suffering serious injuries from a car accident.
After "fighting the good fight," the bass guitarist died at age 42 early on Saturday morning, according to Cheng's mother, Jeanne Marie Cheng.
"This is the hardest thing to write to you," she posted to OneLoveForChi.com, a website intended to raise money for Cheng and communicate with fans.
"He was taken to the emergency room, and at 3 a.m. today, his heart just suddenly stopped," Cheng, known to fans as Mom J, continued. "He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear."
Cheng was a founding member of the Deftones in 1988. The metal band won a Grammy Award for best metal performance in 2001.
"I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage and a heart for every one of you," Mom J added. "He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone."
Meanwhile, a candlelight vigil was planned for the bassist on Sunday evening at Sacramento's Cesar Chavez Plaza.
On Twitter, Cheng's fans are paying tributes to the music man on Monday, including fellow musicians such as DJ Skrillex.
"My heart goes out to Chi Cheng, all of his family and loves ones and all of the @deftones fans out there. RIP brother," the DJ posted.
Rachael wrote, "Deeply shocked and saddened. I didn't see it going this way. No Words. #RIP #Cheng."
"Terrible to hear about the passing of #Deftones bassist player Chi Cheng," wrote Matthew. "Condolences to family and friends."
Charlie added, "RIP Chi Cheng, you were an inspiration!"
Furthermore, fellow musicians such as bassist TonyKanal of No Doubt and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst have mourned Cheng's death.
Cheng leaves behind his mother, siblings Mae and Ming, and a son, Gabriel.
