'Destiny 2' Release Date Rumor: Sequel Focuses on Osiris and Mercury, Comes to Current-Gen Consoles in September

Despite the success of "Destiny," a number of players feel it's time to move forward with the franchise. Adding fuel to fans' desire for a sequel are rumors of "Destiny 2's" release date, plot, and settings.

Osiris-centric plot and Mercury setting

Back in July, Reddit user formemerald leaked details on "Destiny 2." The original post has been deleted, but another Reddit user The_Schnitz reposted it.

According to the leak, the sequel will be titled "Destiny 2 - The Shattered Suns," and it will be "a completely new game." Planet Mercury will be the "main area" of the sequel that players will explore. Focus will be heavy on Osiris as the main quest giver, and a new form of enemy is currently in the works, possibly Ahamkara.

One thing that won't change for players, though, will be the ability to use their current characters in "Destiny 2."

"Destiny 2" releases in the fall for Xbox One and PS4?

Last year, a leaked document revealed that developer Bungie had initially planned to release a "Destiny" sequel in 2015 if the original game had launched in 2013. But "Destiny" got delayed and so the sequel is now expected to come within the year. The exact release window is speculated to be in the fall, specifically in September. This information was also specified in the "Destiny 2" leak discussed earlier.

However, another rumor says a major update — not a full-fledged sequel — is coming in September. Bungie's Marketing Director Eric Osborne had previously stated that guardians can expect to receive several major updates in the game's year two, although he failed to mention their specific release windows.

When the sequel does release, fans have also come to believe that "Destiny 2" will be playable on current-generation consoles, namely Xbox One and PlayStation 4. This way, the game could come with improved visuals and new gameplay features that were not possible in the previous game, which also runs on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Making the sequel available on PCs is also something fans are looking forward to.

Needless to say, none of the "Destiny 2" rumors and fan suggestions mentioned in this article have been confirmed so take them with a grain of salt.
