'Doctor Strange' updates: Movie to show the 'darker' side of Marvel, Mads Mikkelsen to join cast

While many moviegoers may not be very familiar with Marvel's "Doctor Strange," comic book geeks are well aware of the dark and psychedelic history of the so-called Sorcerer Supreme, and rumors suggest that the upcoming film just may open "darker" doors for Marvel Studios.

During the BAFTA Masterclass in London, cinematographer Ben Davis said, "It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it's not your typical Marvel action movie," Movie Pilot reported.

Davis' statements raised speculation that Doctor Strange may only be the door-opener for future Marvel projects in "dark" mode. Although it has not been confirmed, experts say the movie's attempt to show fans a shadowed part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) just might be a great idea.

The speculation was further fueled as news surfaced last week about Mads Mikkelsen being cast for a mystery role. As expected, fans immediately started digging into details as to which character he will be playing.

According to the Christian Post, if talks for his entry into the film get settled, he will most probably be given a role similar to that of Chiwetel Ejiofor, who will be playing the main villain, Baron Mondo.

Meanwhile, Cinema Blend suggests that the Danish "Hannibal" star could be given roles such as Nightmare, Doctor Steven Strange's foe in 1963's Strange Tales #110; Dormammu, one of the doctor's arch-nemeses; Satannish, one of the Hello Lords the sorcerer has been battling since the comic version's early years; Mephisto, the demon known for building up striking bargains in exchange of someone's soul; or D'Spayre, the master of fear.

With Mikkelsen joining Benedict Cumberbatch and other big names for the upcoming movie, experts deem that if fans will patronize the first attempt of Marvel into a more serious world, the giant company just might decide to pave more roads for future similar storylines.

Doctor Strange is expected to hit the big screen on Nov. 4, 2016.
