'Doctor Who' Cast News, Update: Showrunner Steven Moffat Thinks Twelfth Doctor Loves Clara
Actor Peter Capaldi made it very clear when he told The Sunday Times that his Time Lord character in the hit science-fiction TV drama series "Doctor Who" won't share any flirting moments with his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman).
However, a recent turn of event seems to suggest otherwise. This information was teased by none other than the showrunner himself, Steven Moffat, who lately spoke at the BAFTA New York panel.
"We're in a very different place with the Doctor and Clara in the modern series, it's been a while since I've seen the early stages of the Twelfth Doctor trying to pretend he doesn't fancy Clara – 'Oh you're ugly! Disgusting!…Stop looking so good!'" the executive producer told The Mary Sue.
"In truth, in most cases with the Doctor he always loves them more than they love him. That's his story. He's always besotted with them even though he's trying to pretend that he isn't," Moffat revealed.
The Twelfth Doctor himself told the press a year ago that there would definitely be no flirting in the TARDIS during his tenure.
"It's not what this Doctor's concerned with. It's quite a fun relationship, but no, I did call and say, 'I want no Papa-Nicole moments.' I think there was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant," Capaldi said.
Some agree with Capaldi's original stance on the Doctor's relationship with Clara.
"While I agree with Moffat on the fact that the Doctor loves Clara, I disagree with the nature of that love, and I find it cheap that he would demean both the Doctor and Clara by reducing it to mere sexual attraction," Mary Sue reported.
What exactly does Moffat meant with his statement? Will it contradict with the characteristics of the beloved character? Will the fans be able to get a hint of this development in the upcoming season?
"Doctor Who" is slated to return to BBC and BBC America this fall.
