Droid Razr Maxx Smartphone Review

Verizon recently launched the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, the follow up device to the world's thinnest smartphone, the Droid Razr.

The Maxx sports some interesting new features including a 3300 mAh battery that lasts incredibly long. It could be the most powerful one of its kind in the market.

The Droid Razr was the "world's thinnest smartphone," and will remain that way since the Maxx does not make the line any thinner. The Maxx increases in size and price at $300 with a two-year agreement. But is it worth the upgrade?

Tech site Engadget recently reviewed the device. According to the site, the new Razr Maxx looks almost identical to the original version. The main difference is that the Maxx is 8.9mm thick and the original is only 7.1mm. Even though it's slightly thicker than its predecessor, it is still thinner than most other smartphones on the market.

It is also slightly heavier than the Droid Razr at 5.11-ounces still making it thinner than the Galaxy Nexus. Motorola has successfully displayed that there is no longer an excuse for other smartphone makers to include small batteries in their devices since the Maxx still maintains a thin frame and holds a 3300 mAh power pack.

The main differences between the Razr Maxx and the original version are the larger battery and plumper profile. The other specifications remain the same between the two. The Maxx includes the same Kevlar backing, Gorilla Glass screen and PenTile qHD display as the original.

Engadget was quite impressed with the Razr Maxx's battery life. The 3300 mAh provided over 16.5 hours of power for the site that repeatedly ran a video loop on it to test its endurance. Compared to the original Droid Razr that lasted around nine hours during the same test, the Razr Maxx proved to be almost twice as powerful.

The next test the site ran involved it giving the phone a full charge in the morning and using it moderately for two days. After a day and a half it still had 40 percent charge and on the third day the handset was at 20 percent.

The Droid Razr Maxx includes an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front shooter. Engadget said that the sensors are identical to that on the original Razr and that Colors are still muted in direct sunlight on the new device. Panorama shots on the new Maxx are also hit or miss.

Its video capture is still as good as the original Droid Razr's that also films in 1080p HD. The site comments on some compression issues and that filming in 720p makes for a better quality video.
