Emmylou Harris Accident: Country Star, 65, Charged With Hit and Run

Country star Emmylou Harris, who was involved in an accident last year, has been charged with a misdemeanor hit and run.

Harris is a Grammy award-winning artist and activist who has supported women, veterans, and animal rights in the past. On Wednesday, the singer was charged for failing to exchange information on Oct. 1 after hitting another car on the freeway, according to the Associated Press.

The charges were the result of a criminal complaint that was filed after the incident occurred, although few other details were released. The 65-year-old singer's publicist did not release a statement after the charges were announced.

A lawyer representing Harris issued a "not guilty" plea Wednesday on her behalf, reported TMZ. A previous statement made by Harris' rep suggested the hit was a "garden-variety accident that happens every day on the 405."

The representative also added that Harris left the scene unaware that she had struck another car. The accident occurred at sometime around 10 pm according to the report.

Harris could face up to six months in prison if convicted on the charges, although fans of the country singer had a difficult time believing that she "could do anything wrong."

"It's not called Hit-and-Run on the 405...it's called Lane Changing," one user wrote on a TMZ blog.

Other users were less supportive.

"How do you hit another car on the 405 and not realize it? Even if it were a tiny bump, you'd know something happened," another user said. "Also, I've never seen bumper-to-bumper traffic on the 405 at that time of night. She just thought she could run and get away with it."
