'Empire' Season 2 Premiere Date, Cast News: Singer Mariah Carey Will Play A Different Role in Season 2; Cookie's Sister to Appear?

The upcoming sophomore season of Fox's break-out TV series "Empire" is expected to feature the acts of A-List names including Chris Rock, Ludacris, Lenny Kravitz, Kelly Rowland, Pitbull, Alicia Keys and Marisa Tomei, just to name a few. It was even heard in previous reports that the R&B and soul diva, Mariah Carey will be appearing but in a yet to be disclosed part.

Giving further details about this casting report is the show's co-creator Lee Daniels who recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly. Daniels, who is also said to be a close friend with the multiplatinum-selling artist, reiterated that Mariah is coming over to the show. However, her appearance also entailed the writers "trying to crack a story for her."

"As with Mariah, she wants it her way. But as with Lee Daniels, I want it my way. So it's the usual back-and-forth with mamacita until we figure out exactly what it's going to be. We're very close to cracking story for her. But we're very excited," he said (via EW).

The show boss further clarified that although "it would be great to play her," the mother of two insists that she "doesn't want to play her" and that's where the series will start to work on.

As to when she would appear this season, Daniels hinted that "she's going to be in our finale," which as it turns out, an episode that he will be directing.

In a related news, "Kill Bill" star Vivica A. Fox is also slated to appear in Season 2 for a confirmed role – Cookie's (Taraji P. Henson) sister.

Executive producer Ilene Chaiken hinted during the interview with Entertainment Weekly that "Cookie's other family members are troublesome to say the least" and it seems that Fox's character is about to give the Lyon queen some headaches.

"Empire" Season 2 premieres September 23 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
