Erskine College Association of Minority Students (AMS) led a candlelight service on Thursday evening as the concluding event in a celebration of Black History Month.

The service included special music by an ensemble of AMS members, reading from works by and about African-Americans, a slide show, and a candlelight ceremony.

“This is not only African-American history, but American history," said AMS President Ashley Pressley. "We were glad to share this with the Erskine campus, and look forward to providing more opportunities in the future."

Black History Month was first celebrated on Feb. 1, 1926 as Negro History Week. It evolved into a month-long celebration 50 years later.

Throughout the month of February, AMS members presented African-American history facts during announcement time at Erskine’s twice-weekly convocations and sent out a weekly Black History Quiz.
