Erykah Badu performed at the 2012 Afro Punk Festival recently where she sang and danced to a shortened version of Nicki Minaj's "Beez in the Trap." However, the performance caused some to question if Badu was mocking Minaj, prompting the former to clear the air on Twitter.
Badu, 41-year-old neo-soul artist who also goes by the monikers Loretta Brown, Analog Girl in a Digital World, Fat Belly Bella and Medulla Oblongata, sang to the Minaj's song with the help of a live band. The singer and DJ remixed the tune adding her own words and saying, "This is what she should have said...," which prompted some to question if she was mocking the 29-year-old Queens, New York rapper.
Badu's remixed version of Minaj's song featured the lyrics, "Cats ain't (expletive) cuz they ain't catching nothing, I'm trying to figure out how to catch these rodents...cheese in the trap." Although the audience cheered at Badu's remix before the song switched into her own popular track "Danger," some people took to Twitter to question the artist.
"Erykah Badu drags the pure hell out of Nicki Minaj," one person commented on the social networking website.
Another person seemed upset at the thought.
"Erykah Badu Mocks Nicki Minaj On Stage," another person tweeted. "Can't our ladiez (sic) of hip hop just get along?"
Yet, another person tweeted their surprise about Badu reportedly mocking Minaj.
"Yooooooo Erykah Badu is coming at Nicki Minaj neck and then she did the dougie," the person tweeted. "My life is over."
However, Badu took to her Twitter account to clear up the rumors.
"Quit playin!!! I adore Nicky M," Badu tweeted. "She's ILLy original. Fearless. I put that on two anks."
Minaj recently announced that she would be touring internationally this fall, while Badu is reportedly gearing up to star in the film adaptation of the novel "Maker of Saints."
