Former Christian rock band Evanescence released their first album in five years today, and have gone the self-titled route after being delayed for nearly two years.
Known for their much darker rock/nu metal sound, lead singer Amy Lee told Spin Magazine the record was “Fun– and that’s a totally new thing for us.”
The writing for this album began in June 2009, but due to two producer changes and more material, the album got bumped up.
Evanescence wanted to give the fans something more than previous works. In a statement released through the band’s website in 2009, Lee wanted the album to be “better, stronger, and more interesting.”
She further describes the album in an interview with Billboard Magazine saying, “[the album is] epic, dark, big, beautiful, and desperate.”
The first single off the album is “What You Want” and was released digitally Aug. 9 with a video following on Sept. 13.

The second single, “My Heart is Broken,” will be released on Oct. 31.
The band received their big break through when they released Fallen in 2003 on Wind-Up Records and spent 43 weeks on the Billboard Top 10 with their top single “Bring Me to Life.”
The album sold more 15 million copies worldwide and went 7x Platinum.
Their follow-up album came in 2006 with Open Door but was a slow process compared to their last work. The band went on a small hiatus after this release.
Originally billed and sold as a Christian act, Evanescence wanted to escape that moniker altogether much like label mates Creed because of their dark nature and Christian music’s restrictions.
Evanescence has been nominated for five MTV Europe Awards, and one MTV Australia Award, which they won for “Album of the Year” in 2007.
They have also been nominated for seven Grammy’s winning two of them for “Best New Artist” and “Best Hard Rock Performance” in 2004.
