Family of BYU Student Hit by Car Give Thanks for 'Miraculous' Healing

The family of a Brigham Young University student is rejoicing after their 18-year-old daughter made a miraculous recovery after being hit by a car. The family of Lexi Hansen is giving thanks to God for their daughter's progress and have started a national movement calling for more prayer as Lexi recovers.

"When they brought her in, the doctors gave her less than a 5 percent chance of survival," Doug Hansen, Lexi's father, told Deseret News. "They told us to call our family and get them here quickly because she wasn't going to last too long."

The family rallied around the girl, who had been riding her longboard when she was hit by a car and suffered severe head trauma. She was in a coma for several days, during which her family gathered around her bedside and sang hymns and offered prayers for her recovery.

"We had the most amazing experience today at the end of everyone's fast," the family wrote on the Facebook page "Pray for Lexi." "Lexi opened her eyes and kept them open for nearly an hour while we sang hymns to her as a family. While we were singing, she hand-signed, 'I love you,' moving her arm around so that everyone could see. She then reached for each person's hands individually so she could squeeze them. We could hardly sing due to the tears streaming down our face. We knew we were witnessing a miracle."

Even the doctors have called Lexi a "miracle" and are surprised at her progress. She is already working with a speech and physical therapist and has been removed from her breathing tube. While the family knows there is still a great deal of work to be done, they are grateful for Lexi's spirit and progress, as well as the example of healing they see from God.

"Every single day is a miracle – every single day. It was a zero percent when she was found," Lexi's mother, Marcia, said. "Now there are still a few things that we are not sure of, but almost everything is just positive. We know it's because of God. We know he's a God of miracles. And the prayers and faiths [of] everybody that have been praying for her. That's the only reason she is where she's at."

The Pray for Lexi Facebook page currently has over 16,000 likes and is quickly gaining attention as people learn of Lexi's story.
