Libya’s chief forensic pathologist who carried out the postmortem examination of the former Libyan leader’s body has officially revealed that Col. Muammar Gaddafi died of a gunshot wound to the head.

The doctor stated that it is obvious that he died due to the gunshot wound, but did not give further details about the cause of the death, according to Reuters.

“There are still several issues. We have to pass [the report] to the prosecutor general. But everything will be revealed publicly. Nothing will be hidden,” he said.

The postmortem was conducted at a morgue in the city of Misrata, around 200 km east of Tripoli.

Gaddafi’s body has been stored on a blood-stained mattress in a commercial freezer in Misrata, Libya since Thursday. It hasn’t been available for public view since the postmortem was being carried out, but it will now be brought back for public viewing, according to local officials.

A video that emerged on the Internet shows a young fighter claiming he shot Gaddafi after he was captured. According to Sky News, this contradicts with the statement of National Transitional Council (NTC) interim leadership that the tyrant was killed in crossfire while being transported to the hospital.

NTC foreign affairs spokesman Ahmed Jibreel had reportedly said that the transfer of the body will be imminent but it was not decided where Gaddafi’s body will be buried. His burial has been delayed due to a fuller investigation carried out into how he died.

A mass celebration took place today as the interim leadership in Benghazi formally marked the “liberation” of Libya. It may represent the start of the transition to democracy in Libya and elections are expected to take place next year.

Crowds in Martyrs’ Square in Tripoli are proclaiming that today marks the start of a new era for the country.
