'Game of Thrones' News: HBO Renews Up to Season 6, Movie in the Works?

"Game of Thrones" Season 5 has yet to come back on air but news are already circulating that HBO has renewed the show up to Season 6 and that a feature film is in the works.

The show's writer, George R.R. Martin, intimated in his live blog that a "Game of Thrones" movie is also being discussed, according to a Variety report.

"I see that this new crop of stories also raises, once again, the notion of concluding the series with one or more feature films. And in some of these stories, once again, this idea is wrongly attributed to me. Let me state, yet again, that while I love this idea, it did NOT originate with me. It was a notion suggested to me, which I have enthusiastically endorsed," he wrote on his blog.

Apparently, HBO's big boss Michael Lombardo is not as enthusiastic about the movie idea. In another report in IGN, he put the rumors of a feature film in the horizon to rest. His primary reason is that he thinks it is unfair to HBO subscribers to expect them to pay extra for a movie in order for them to see how the series ends when in fact their HBO fee is already a commitment that they will see the series at the very end.

Lombardo, however, confirmed HBO's desire to go beyond Season 6 with the series. If it were up to them, they wanted the series to last until Season 10. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have previously said that they are looking at the series up until Season 7.

"We started this journey with David and Dan. It's their vision. Would I love the show to go 10 years as both a fan and a network executive? Absolutely," Lombardo told Entertainment Weekly. But he still deferred the decision to the show's creators.

Season 5 of "Game of Thrones" starts on April 12. So far, HBO has released two trailers as part of its promotional campaign for the upcoming season.
