'Game of Thrones' season 6 news, cast, spoilers: Did George R.R. Martin just drop a major spoiler?

"Game of Thrones" season 5 finale has been the most watched episode of all the season. It's no wonder that the new season is already building up speculation even when its premiere is not until 10 months from now.

However, it seems that George R.R. Martin won't be waiting for the premiere of season 6 to reveal a possible major spoiler. The writer has never been one to shy away from fan questions and express his opinions. Recently, a correspondence with one of the fans on his blog had him, purposely or accidentally, slip a big detail.

According to Screenrant, a fan asked Martin directly if Stannis Baratheon was alive or dead, in which the author replied, "In my books? Alive, beyond a doubt." Viewers who would choose to dwell on this fact are inclined to think that Stannis may not have exactly died in Brienne's hands. After all, it wasn't fully shown that he died, only with the last show of Brienne lifting her sword up and then blacking out.

However, there are still a lot who believe that this is not news at all. It isn't surprising that Stannis Baratheon would be alive in the books but not in the show. After all, there are a number of characters that have definitely went off the intended storyline in the books. Martin did emphasize that it is in his books that the character is still alive. Moreover, he said that the show and the books might not be parallel this season since the books will no longer be released the same time as the series.

Another clue about the certain death of Stannis would be the fact that season 5 director David Nutter has already confirmed before by saying, "From the very beginning, and [through] the script process, that was the intent — he's dead.".

Fans will have to wait on whether they would see Stannis Baratheon back on screen when season 6 of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO in 2016.
