Father's Day 2017: Gift Suggestions for Dad this Father's Day

For moms and kids who are planning on giving something special for "Father's Day," planning early and scouting for the perfect gift is recommended.

"Father's Day" is celebrated in the United States, United Kingdom and other countries on the third Sunday of June. This year, it falls on June 18. It is a public holiday for the Americans.

According to Metro, Lyndon Johnson first marked the date on the public calendar in 1966. It was not until 1972 that Richard Nixon officially declared the occasion as a holiday. In some parts of Europe and Latin America, "Father's Day" is reportedly being observed in March. Australians celebrate it in September.

The celebration to thank dads all over the world is said to have started about a century ago, at least, in the U.S. The Brits, on the other hand, began observing the said date in the late 1940s.

Its history is sketchy at its best. Some sources claim that the tradition started following a terrible mine explosion in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908. Grace Golden Clayton reportedly chose the date to urge the children of the 360 men who died to always remember what happened.

Americans usually celebrate "Father's Day" by gift and card giving. A website has recently compiled a list of possible gifts for dads who are confirmed gearheads. For kids who want to make their car enthusiast fathers happy on their special day, they may ask mom to look for items that will be very much appreciated. For example, car care kits will go a long way. They are practical and relatively cheap, something that dads will find useful. For fathers who work in the office, a chair where they can recline happily and comfortably is a good gift.

Those who are willing to splurge may want to consider purchasing a dash camera. Good quality cams may come with a sensor, wifi and traffic enforcement warning. Others on the list of potential gifts are brand new seatbelts, a gas can flask, gas cards or a gift card for a car wash or detailing.
