The Golden Globes is a pretty serious awards ceremony in Hollywood, but for many fashionistas the biggest competition actually happens before the ceremony begins, on the red carpet.

The 70th Golden Globes ceremony was held on Sunday at 8 p.m. E.T. but the real activities began at 6 p.m., as the stars arrived on the red carpet. Here's a recap of who wore what.

Winning Acts and Their Gowns

Anne Hathaway

Hathaway was nominated as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role in "Les Miserables." The actress wore a white Chanel gown with a straight skirt that flared at the bottom and a separate matching top.

Jennifer Lawrence

The "Silver Linings Playbook" actress arrived on the red carpet wearing a soft red Dior gown that was complemented by a metallic, silver belt and bell skirt. Lawrence took home the award for Best Actress for a comedy/musical.

Maroon to Swoon At

Red appeared to be the more obvious choice on Sunday night, Zooey Deschanel and Claire Danes joined Lawrence in a red hue, but maroon was also a surprisingly popular color. Taylor Swift arrived on the carpet wearing a maroon Dona Karan Atelier fishtail gown. Dena Dunham, the "Girls" actress and producer, wore a maroon too in a Zac Posen gown that was figure flattering, although she admitted to having adjustment issues.

Barely There Nude Gowns

Beige was stunning on some more daring actresses like Helen Hunt, who wore Dolce and Gabbana, and Amy Adams who wore a similar toned Marchesa. Connie Britton, Kerry Washington, and Jennifer Lopez also wore skin colored gowns.
